Girls Basketball vs Clackamas 12.6.19
December 11, 2019
To start the game off it was looking like the Cavs could possibly handle the Mavs. For the first 2 minutes that is. Until the Mavs gave the ball to their star forward and captain, Cameron Brink (senior). She did a tremendous job of controlling the glass and getting buckets. The Mavs showed their dominance for the 1st quarter, and into the second. All the way up to the point until Cam got 2 quick fouls on top of a foul in the first; forcing the Mav to sit for the remainder of the half.
This is when the Clackamas had a nice little comeback going on a little run. Kalli So (Junior for Clackamas) made a contested 3 pointer to give them momentum going into the half but Halle Hageman (sophomore) nailed a half-court shot as time expired. The Mavericks lead at halftime 31-16.
To start off the second half, the Mavericks came out firing scoring on their first 3 pointers. They quickly put up 9 points in the second half. However the moral of the story is officiating…there were some good calls but a lot of bad calls going both ways. Cameron Brink had a steal and took it to the rim only to get a charge called on her. This foul sent her to the bench where she’d sit until the start of the 4th. With the shot blocker out of the paint, the Cavaliers showed some resilience and tacked 12 more to their total. The Cavaliers were slowly inching their way back and were able to cut it to a 13 point lead. To start the 4th quarter the starters came in.
It was a bit of a stalemate in some ways, until Cameron got a block, which was also a “foul” at the same time. The Cavs found some life as Coach Landolt said, “the effort and their hustle.” You could see their players going for those “50/50 balls” as they dove and reached for the ball whenever there was ever a chance. Coach Landolt also praised her team for their execution of plays. The Cavs would come back to battle by closing the gap to a 10 point game and then slowly chipping away. However, the Mavericks were ready for battle and made some clutch free throws to seal the game; the Mavericks ended up winning the game 57-46.
After the game, Cameron spoke out about her first game in a Maverick Uniform. “It was super exciting, I’m really happy here, and I love my team.” She also expects the team to be aggressive, kind of like Clackamas. The future looks bright for both teams. Having a lot of positives and negatives to draw on. The Mavericks played Sherwood Saturday night and secured the win over the Bowman 77-52. They look to play the Canby Cougars in Canby at 7 pm on Friday night.
